Our Big Win: Autism Works Grant - A Milestone for Neurodivergent Team

Our commitment to an inclusive and supportive workplace

We are thrilled to announce that our organisation has been one of 17 recipients to be awarded with the prestigious Autism Works In the Community Grant! This incredible achievement marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive, accessible, and supportive workplace for all employees, especially our neurodivergent staff.

Supporting Neurodivergent Employees

When we first came across this Grant, we saw an opportunity to find ways of not only making our participants’ lives easier, but also shining a focus on our employees who identified as being neurodivergent, to successfully integrate into and perform in their role within our workplace. While there was a tight turnaround with applying for the grant, key executive members came together to discuss what this grant would mean for our neurodivergent employees to benefit from the grant.

Winning this grant is more than just a financial boost; it's a testament to our dedication to creating an environment where everyone can thrive. The Autism Works In the Community Grant recognises organisations that are taking steps and meaningful strides in supporting people with neurodivergent presentations. We are proud to be acknowledged for our efforts and excited about the opportunities this grant will bring.

Implementing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program

With the support of the Autism Works In the Community Grant, we are looking forward to implementing several key initiatives aimed at enhancing the work experience for our neurodivergent team members. With that in mind, we are over the moon to announce our participation in the wonderful initiative - the Hidden Disabilities (HD) Sunflower Program. This initiative allows individuals with hidden disabilities to discreetly indicate their need for additional support or understanding by wearing a sunflower-themed lanyard or badge. By adopting this program, we aim to create a more supportive and empathetic environment where all employees feel seen and valued. As a disability-centred organisation, we hope to drive conversations about focusing on the wellbeing of our neurodivergent employees, who work in different areas within the disability sector and across a range of participants with complex presentations.

Here’s a glimpse of what we have in store:

  • Thanks to the HD Sunflower Program, we will be supported via training videos that will introduce specialised guidance on ways organisations like Hessel Group can accommodate the needs of our neurodivergent employees across our clinics in Fullarton and Welland. We will be guided on how we can assist with the individual employee’s skill development, career growth, and personal empowerment as a neurodivergent person. These programs are designed to help our team members build confidence and excel in their roles. To foster a more inclusive culture, we will also conduct regular awareness and sensitivity training for all employees. This will help in promoting understanding, empathy, and effective communication across the organisation.
  • Part of the grant will be allocated to making our physical and digital workspaces more accessible. While we have included a sensory space at the Welland Clinic and are finding ways to mirror the same at our Fullarton clinic, we will be using the accessories offered by the HD Sunflower Program (such as the pins, badges, lanyards, and posters) to invite prospective neurodivergent employees and participants alike and make them feel warmly welcomed, acknowledged, and accepted for who they are. We are also looking at cost-effective ways of modifying the workspace in a way that is accessible and allows employees to be across our policies and procedures in an easy-read format for greater learning and success.
  • We are looking at setting up mentorship programs that pair neurodivergent staff with experienced mentors, who understand their unique challenges and strengths. Additionally, support networks will provide a platform for employees to share experiences, offer advice, and build a strong sense of community.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program aligns perfectly with our goal of supporting neurodivergent staff by providing them with an easy way to communicate their needs. We believe this will foster a culture of greater awareness and sensitivity, enhancing the overall work experience for everyone.

The Autism Works In the Community Grant is a significant milestone for the betterment of our organisation, but it’s just the beginning. We are committed to continuously improving our practices and policies to ensure that our workplace is welcoming and empowering for all.
