Our positive behaviour support practitioner Stephen will now also be providing counselling services at Hessel Group, bringing a dynamic and energetic approach with a focus on a person-centred therapy experience.
Counselling is a form of therapy where we work together to help a person through personal challenges, emotional difficulties, and mental health issues. It's a safe space to explore your feelings, thoughts, and behaviours with the goal of achieving better mental well-being and life satisfaction.
A first counselling session can be a little nerve-wracking, you’re meeting someone new and can be in a vulnerable position. As a counsellor, I will be providing you a safe space to be yourself and support you in feeling comfortable. We’ll get to know each other, build a connection and work towards meeting your goals and aspirations. Building trust with each other is the cornerstone of counselling and providing a person-centred approach that tailors to your needs as a person will be my focus and foundation as a counsellor.
Counselling is often referred to as “talking therapy”, so as you can imagine we may be doing quite a bit of talking in our sessions. Counselling requires the individual to also work towards their goals outside of sessions, so don’t be surprised at times if you get a little bit of homework and yes, I will be grading you on this. Counselling works best when we both work together!
For NDIS clients, counselling offers tailored support to enhance daily living skills, build resilience, and improve overall quality of life. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, or other mental health concerns, counselling provides the tools and strategies to manage these effectively. It’s about empowering you to live your best life.
Being person-centred means, I put you at the heart of our sessions. Your goals, values, and preferences guide our work together. I believe in creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment where you feel heard and understood. Every client is unique, and I tailor my methods to fit your individual needs. Counselling works differently for everyone, whether we start slowly and build our way up, or hit the ground running, whatever approach works best for you, we will discover and go by.
With my background in Positive Behaviour Support, I have an understanding of this practice and have incorporated elements of counselling, as my foundation of delivering PBS. I have used elements of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) which helps clients identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviours, fostering a more positive mindset. Exposure therapy is another therapy I have utilised which is fantastic for reducing fears and anxieties by gradually exposing clients to what they fear in a controlled and safe manner
At Hessel Group, we’re not just about addressing mental health challenges; we’re about building connections, fostering growth, and having a bit of fun along the way. If you’re ready to embark on a journey to better mental health, I’m here to support you every step of the way.
